IEC 61850 ist der neueste Standard für Kommunikationnetzwerke und -systeme in Unterstationen. Der Definitionsumfang der Norm geht weit über den Umfang des Vorgängers IEC 60870-5-101 hinaus. IEC 61850 besteht aus folgenden Einzelnormen:

IEC 61850 beschränkt sich nicht auf die Form, in der die Daten übertragen werden, sondern definiert auch ein komplettes Datenmodel. Zusätzlich wird eine XML-basierte Sprache eingeführt (Substation Configuration description Language -  SCL), die eine herstellerunabhängige Form bietet, Geräte und ihre Konfiguration zu beschreiben.
