At the Total Akpo project
for the offshore oil platform off the Nigerian coast, ipConvPS is used as a
communication interface connecting the ABB switchgears to the Siemens control
system. ipConvPS communicates downstream with the switchgears through the
ABB communication gateway COM610 using the IEC 60870-5-104 protocol assuming the
role of the controlling station. Upstream communication with the control system
has been implemented through Profibus DPV0 coupling with the Siemens S7-400
automation device, in which case ipConvPS acts as the slave.
A special feature in this
project is the transmission of time-stamped events (SOEs), a functionality not
normally supported by Profibus DPV0. Successful integration of both systems was
accomplished in a very short time frame.
